Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

  • When NHCPL does not own a particular item, it can be requested through the interlibrary loan service.

  • A maximum of two (2) items may be requested and/or borrowed at any given time.

    • All ILL submissions are reviewed as possible Suggestions for Purchase

    • If your submission is selected for purchase, we will place a hold in your name and notify you.

  • Please check our catalog to ensure we do not own the item before submitting an ILL Request.

To request an item through interlibrary loan:

  • A current library card is required.  The patron’s card should be in good standing (no fees over $10.00). The library card must be used for check-out prior to requesting an Interlibrary Loan.
    • Cost: $2.00, non-refundable for each interlibrary loan request, to be paid at the time of checkout.
    • Once the item arrives, the patron is responsible for the fee.
    • There is no guarantee an item will be retrieved.
    • Occasionally, an additional fee is charged by the lending library for photocopying, insurance, etc.
    • The patron will be notified prior to the item being shipped if they owe an additional amount.

    • Full name, library card number, email and phone number.
    • If you are a new cardholder, you cannot request an Interlibrary Loan until you have checked out and returned two items to show you are in good standing.
    • Author and title for each item.
  • An item must be at least 1 year old.
  • Renewals must be requested via the ILL desk, (910) 798-6359, five days prior to the due date of the item.
    • The lending libraries determine the due date and they may deny renewal.
    • The average loan period is 3-4 weeks maximum.
  • If more than one item is requested at a time, more than likely the items will arrive at different times.
  • Arrival times cannot be guaranteed, varying from one week to a month.
  • The fee for overdue ILL books is 20 cents per day.
  • Any charge from a lending library will be passed on to the patron.
  • Some restrictions may apply such as no renewal or in-library use.
